Shown is Dellinger at Columbia in 1919 at a party for a returning soldier. He is the second figure on the left behind the table. The odd figure in military uniform is a model of a Pithecanthropus.
University Museum Collections, University of Arkansas A Brief Biography
Samuel Claudius Dellinger was born January 14, 1892, in North Carolina. After earning an M.A. in Zoology, Dellinger moved to Conway, Arkansas, in 1915 to teach biology at Hendrix College. He married Elsie Adkisson while there. Dellinger began his career with the University of Arkansas in fall 1921 as a zoology professor. He returned to Columbia to work on his doctorate, but never completed it, because “Talking, not writing, was his forte.” Dellinger returned to the U of A in 1925 and was soon appointed curator of the UA Museum and later Chair of the Zoology Department. He frequently gave public lectures throughout his career. Dr. Charles R. McGimsey was hired as Dellinger’s replacement in 1957. In 1960, Dellinger formally retired from the University of Arkansas, after working several years in a half-time capacity.
