Sam Dellinger: Raiders of the Lost Arkansas

Old State House Museum

Comparison and Contrast
The point of the sort of scientific collection practiced by the University of Arkansas Museum was to gather as many artifacts from as many sites as possible so they might be compared and contrasted. Contrasts in styles most often indicated distinct cultures. Whereas similarities between sites indicated how widespread a particular culture might be. Similarities over time gave indications of a civilization’s longevity.

Shown are artifacts of two clearly distinct types of prehistoric Arkansas pottery. They were once described as Pre-Caddoan and Pre-Quapaw, after the historic tribes that occupied the same areas, though such a linear lineage is widely disputed today. Often both types are found together at one site, though one type dominates. This is likely the result of trade.
