The development of American archeology as an academic discipline is relatively recent. Late 19th and early 20th century archeologists lacked professional training in their field. In fact, the first archeology field school was organized in the mid-1920s.
Today, training in archeology often includes coursework in such diverse fields as ecology, geophysics and statistics, as well more traditional courses in archeological theory, excavation methods and artifact analysis. In the United States, professional archeologists typically hold graduate degrees in anthropology from accredited universities. |
