Little Rock--The Old State House Museum will help visitors travel back to 1836 with the Statehood Celebration living history event on Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visitors will have an opportunity to explore the past-times of Arkansans at the time of statehood and experience live music, theater, gambling, religious fervor, and public justice as forms of entertainment. Participants can revel with a traveling theater troupe; watch a recreation of a real trial; experience a frontier camp meeting; or try their luck with the Faro dealer. Period games and hands-on activities will be available for children.
Event Schedule:
10 am: Music from Clear the Way
11 am: Camp Meeting
12 pm: Pulaski County Lyceum
1 pm: Trial
2 pm: Music from Clear the Way
3 pm: Little Rock Thalian Club
Clear the Way is a performance group based out of Texas that specializes in the popular music of the 1830’s. The Statehood Celebration will also feature recreated events like those held by the Pulaski County Lyceum, a local educational society during the mid-1830’s that provided timely lectures and debates. Visitors will also be introduced to the Thalian Club, an organization of young Little Rock men that presented popular plays—mainly farces and comedies—to audiences during the mid-1830s.
The Arkansas Statehood Celebration is free to the public and will take place on the lawn of the Old State House Museum. Call the Old State House Museum at (501) 324-9685 for more information.
