Arthur Rothstein

Arthur Rothstein was born in New York in 1915. He attended Columbia University where he met Roy Stryker, who later hired him for the Farm Security Administration photography project. Arthur Rothstein went on to a career as director of photography at Look and later Parade.

Arthur Rothstein's FSA photographs are controversial because he is known to have staged some of them. In one instance he placed a cow skull as a prop in a Dust Bowl photograph. On another occasion he posed a family next to an abandoned, partially buried structure as if it were their home, and then had them lean forward as if walking into the wind.
