Captain Wood's men continued
the fight at the Convent of
Churubusco. After the
Mexican defenses fell, Scott
called a truce. The peace
did not last, but provided
relief for both sides. Wood
wrote proudly:
“Of my men I hardly know how
to speak. The undaunted
courage that has
characterized them on the
field of battle, and the
cheerfulness with which they
have endured fatigues,
privations and hardships
incident to a campaign have
endeared them all to me. I
can only say, although they
are few, Arkansas has been
nobly represented.” |
