The Battlefield
While General Taylor was attending to other matters, General Wool positioned the American troops to take advantage of the site’s mountains and gullies. The rugged terrain of the Narrows made it difficult for the Mexicans to utilize their cavalry, the best part of their army. Instead they sent a large force of infantry to work their way through the arroyos and gullies at the foot of the mountains in an attempt to attack the American’s left flank from the rear.
