The “Try Us” flag
Each company carried a flag,
typically made by ladies in
the community, when they
left Arkansas to fight in
the war. The flag for the
“Van Buren Avengers,” the
company raised around
Crawford County, was
presented to them in
mid-June on the day they
left to rendezvous with
other state troops at
Washington, Arkansas.
Captain John Selden Roane
accepted the flag from Julia
Stewart. The flag was a
variation of the Stars and
Stripes, with the words “Try
Us” embroidered below the
blue field.
