Message from the Governor
After the first battle
reports from the Rio Grande
reached Arkansas, Governor
Thomas Drew sent out a
proclamation on May 9, 1846,
that said, “War has
commenced, the blood of our
fellow citizens has been
shed, and that we shall
probably be needed at an
early day, to avenge that
blood and inflict a just and
summary punishment on the
foe."
