General
Zachary Taylor
On June 15, 1845, President
Polk ordered Brevet
Brigadier General Zachary
Taylor to take 1,500 troops
to Texas to protect the
young republic. Although
Mexico had accepted the
Nueces River as Texas’
southern border, the Rio
Grande River was the border
claimed by Texas. By early
1846, Taylor’s army was sent
into the disputed territory
beyond the Nueces River;
they were concentrated along
the Rio Grande by the end of
July, and the “Army of
Observation” officially
became the “Army of
Occupation.” |
