Geography

Characterized by rugged mountains, high plateaus, low coastal plains and desert, Mexico’s divisive geography, until recent years, has kept roads from being cut from the coast through the mountains on both the east and west sides of the country—limiting travel, economic development, and improvements to its infrastructure.

This engraving of the Buena Vista battlefield makes evident the rugged nature of much of Mexico’s terrain.
