The Whig
Party
The Whig Party was founded
in 1836 in direct opposition
to President Andrew
Jackson’s Democratic Party.
In 1844 they refused to
endorse Texas annexation
unless it could be
accomplished without war
(which it could not) and
without domestic controversy
(which meant the possibility
of extending slavery to new
American lands). Both
Zachary Taylor and Winfield
Scott, generals who fought
in the Mexican War, were
prominent Whigs. |
