Additional Event Details

During Reconstruction from 1865 to 1877, the city of Pine Bluff, Ark., emerged as a sanctuary for African American people in the state. For a time, African American men fully experienced the Jeffersonian idea of “we the people” - they were able to vote, own property and actively participate in the determination of the future of the city. During this time, Wiley Jones rose from unknown barber to a nationally known businessman. His rise was emblematic of the journey that a select few African American men traveled during this period.

Brian Rodgers is community relations liaison for Mosaic Templars Cultural Center. He holds a bachelor's degree in history and a master's in public history from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
