Arkansas First Lady Adeline Clayton:

“I thank God that the Civil War has ended and that the long agony is finally over. My husband, Powell Clayton, says that a strange frenzy drove the southern states to cut loose from the safety of the United States and to join the stormy rebellion of the Confederacy. But the results have been so different from those we Southerners originally expected when the war first started. I just hope things will soon return to normal, and I keep praying that God will give my dear husband strength, compassion, and wisdom throughout his term as the new governor.”
