"Send You Back to Arkansas: Our Own Sweet Sounds II"

Send You Back to Arkansas: Our Own Sweet Sounds II
Jimmy Driftwood as painted by Patterson and Barnes

From now through December of 2004, the Old State House Museum's Education Department will offer special programs centered on our exhibit celebrating Arkansas's contribution to American popular music:

Little Voices (Grades K-3)
Even the youngest of students can appreciate the beauty and emotion of a song. A lesson with activity, Little Voices is a fun, creative environment for musical discovery. Children will be introduced to the fundamentals of music: notes, scales, rhythm, chord assembly, lyrics, instrument identification and more. While working together in "genre-based" ensembles, classes will have an opportunity to create artwork for their very own album covers as they enjoy various styles of music created by their fellow Arkansans. [Program length: 35-40 minutes]

The "Zine" Scene (Grades 4-8 / Excellent for GT)
Imagine that Rolling Stone Magazine has announced a creative writing competition and your class has been selected to participate! The winners will write an exclusive feature article using the Old State House Museum's exciting new music exhibit as a primary resource. Since "Send You Back to Arkansas: Our Own Sweet Sounds II" showcases the talented musicians from Arkansas, the editors at Rolling Stone have decided to forgo their usual freelance writers and researchers and instead enlist your assistance in a "native perspective" piece on the songs and melodies that trace their roots back to the Natural State. They want the point of view of young people in interpreting the influence that these artists, in their respective genres of blues, gospel, rock, country, R&B and jazz, have exerted over the music of today. Assembled as teams, students will brainstorm ideas, examine song selections, and discuss the artifacts and personal effects of local legends. Character identification, special "listening" sessions and in-depth biographical research will aid each group as they develop and submit their creative critiques to a panel of judges. Category awards will also be presented as well as the GRAND PRIZE! Program length: 45-50 minutes.

Sweet Sounds Music Trivia (Grades 4-8)
In Sweet Sounds Music Trivia, teams are established early on so competition becomes a fun, exciting, cooperative activity. Similar in style to game shows like "Jeopardy" and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?", questions are asked in a fast paced forum with correct answers resulting in team points. Group discussion is encouraged - but watch out! Chat on unrelated subjects and you could be slapped with a "One Hit Wonder" citation, causing your team to lose points! Program length: 35-40 minutes.
