Arkansas and the Louisiana Purchase

Jefferson and Napoleon from a 1904 Louisiana Purchase Centennial souvenir

(Grades 4 to 7, available only as an outreach program)

Two hundred years ago, the United States doubled in size overnight! With the stroke of a pen, over 800,000 square miles of land were procured from the French government through the Louisiana Purchase Treaty. This land eventually became 13 American states - including Arkansas! In this program, students learn about Arkansas and the Purchase and have the opportunity to meet William Dunbar, one of the gentlemen sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the territory in what is now Arkansas.
