When Elizabeth Jane Irwin married John Sebastian Little in 1877, she married a man already involved in the world of politics. Her husband was the prosecuting attorney of the Twelfth Judicial District. Prior to being elected to the office of Governor, he served as a circuit judge and as a State Representative. Unfortunately, two days after his inaugural ceremony, he became ill and collapsed. He was unable to serve the rest of his term.

Elizabeth Little was a devoted wife and mother of five children. She did not let her husband's illness come between them and she followed him to various hospitals during his sickness.
