Although Anne Wade Roark first met her husband in Fayetteville, Arkansas, she married Charles Hillman Brough in her hometown of Franklin, Kentucky. They made their home in Fayetteville where Charles Brough taught at the University of Arkansas. The couple had no children of their own but gave support, both moral and financial, to several university students.
When her husband ran for Governor, Anne served as his campaign manager and upon his election to the position of governor, the couple moved to Little Rock.
During World War I the First Lady became active with the Red Cross and made war supplies. She held the position of honorary chairperson of the Women's Auxiliary to the State Council of Defense and was active chairperson of women in the second, third, and fourth Liberty Loans and the Victory Loan.
Anne Brough was a devoted wife. She often traveled with him and attended two national Democratic Conventions. She also was his companion on the "Arkansas on Wheels" train that advertised the state and Arkansas made products.
